Eco Research manages a hydrothermal carbonization plant (HTC) and promotes studies for the decontamination of various matrices from toxic compounds.
The HTC treatment makes it possible to transform, under certain conditions, the biomass into hydrochar, a product similar to lignite. Similarly, it reduces the presence of persistent organic pollutants, such as dioxins and furans, in different matrices, modifying their chemical structure. Although they can derive from natural processes such as volcanic eruptions and forest fires, the presence of these compounds in the environment is highly linked to industrial anthropogenic activities. The use of HTC as a decontamination treatment is promising and opens new possibilities for the remediation of polluted sites and the disposal of hazardous waste.
